Beginning Beekeeping

Planning to become a beekeeper or just interested in attending to see if it a hobby that you would be interested in taking up. Come along to Edendale Farm to one of the beginners courses and get to understand what beekeeping is all about.

Advanced Beekeeping

This course is designed for more advanced beekeepers or for those who have attended the Beginning Beekeeping course. The workshop will provide participants with the additional knowledge and skills required to better manage their hives during the year and to harvest and sell their honey.

An important part of the course will be to provide participants with the opportunity to remove frames of bees and to inspect the colony.

Class size will be kept small so that participants will be able to obtain individual supervision inspecting a hive of live bees.

Practical Queen Rearing

This course on the practical aspects of rearing and managing high quality queens is run over two weekends. The course includes a large component of hands-on work rearing queens to ensure that each participant has the experience, confidence and practical skills necessary to rear his/her own high quality queens. The first weekend will cover the genetics of queen rearing, practical aspects of managing and handling queens as well as hands-on work rearing queens using the hive-split method. The second weekend will inspect results of the queen rearing practice from the first weekend as well as discuss in more detail practical aspects of queen rearing. On completion of the course participants will be able to rear strong, healthy queens suitable for conditions both locally and in Victoria.

Beekeeping- A Taster

Beekeeping is an enjoyable, relaxing and accessible hobby that has recently undergone resurgence. Learn what is involved in keeping your own hive of bees during this informative session.

This session will provide participants with the information necessary to decide if beekeeping is a hobby that they would like to take up. The taster will not include practical work involving live bees or opening a hive for an inspection.
